Machine Works' New Tool for Cutting Force Analysis

Software company Machine Works announced the availability of a new cutting tool engagement demonstrator for cutting force analysis of CAM toolpaths.
Accurate prediction of cutting forces is essential to improve feed rate optimization, manage tool wear and maintain surface quality. Machine Works’ advanced in-tolerance polygonal boundary models are well-suited for such analyses, thanks to their precision in modeling forces and engagement angles during toolpath execution.
The Machine Works API provides key data, such as material removal volume, cut depth and engagement angles. For milling, it tracks the cut’s width and engagement on the tool's left and right sides, while for turning, it returns silhouette profiles. The API also allows users to generate intersect solids, representing material removed during cutting, useful for force analysis and undo operations.
Machine Works recently introduced enhancements like Data Wave2, a single-cable thermocouple system that simplifies setup and reduces costs by up to 30 percent. Additionally, the engagement surface functionality in version 8.6 allows users to analyze the tool’s contact area at the end of its motion.
With both polygonal and sampled geometry engines, Machine Works offers versatile simulation options. The polygonal engine, in particular, provides high accuracy and reliability for detailed cutting force analysis, especially for thin tools and precision cuts.
